LATRA Announces Standard Class Fares for SGR, (Bei Nauli Za Treni SGR 2024 (Fares for SGR) Tanznia) Dar to Moro and Dodoma To Dar, The Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has officially announced the standard class passenger fares for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Makutupora.
According to the announcement, passengers traveling from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma will be required to pay TZS 31,000.This fare is slightly higher than the cost charged by many buses for the same route.
For instance, the Shabiby bus charges TZS 29,000 for a similar journey.Salum Pazzy, the Head of Public Relations and Communications at LATRA, stated that this announcement follows the decisions made by the Board of Directors regarding the application from the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) and advice from various stakeholders.
Key Requirements for SGR Operations
Before these fares can be implemented, several critical conditions must be met. These include TRC obtaining a transportation license, ensuring the safety certification of the railway infrastructure and carriages, using an electronic ticketing system, and integrating this system with LATRA’s systems.
Salum emphasized that LATRA has instructed TRC to calculate payments and maintain records of passenger information and fares paid. Additionally, TRC must employ adequately skilled staff and drivers registered with LATRA.
Fares for Children
LATRA has also announced fares for children aged 4 to 12 years, with the fare for a journey from Dar es Salaam being TZS 15,000. Children under the age of four will not be charged a fare, but their information will be stored in the passenger information system.
Additional Requirements
TRC is required to implement a Passenger Management Information System and a Train Tracking System. They must also display station-to-station fares in easily visible areas for passengers.
Furthermore, LATRA has mandated that service providers ensure high-quality customer service, including clean station environments, clean carriages, food and beverages, safe drinking water, adequate lighting, and a compensation system for accidents and loss of passenger luggage.
