NanaOn-Sha created the rhythm game PaRappa the Rapper[b]. Sony Computer Entertainment released it for the PlayStation in Japan in 1996 and internationally in 1997. The game, which is regarded as the first real rhythm game and was developed by music producer Masaya Matsuura in partnership with artist Rodney Greenblat, has a distinctive visual style and rap-based gameplay.
In honor of the game’s tenth anniversary, a port to the PlayStation Portable was made in 2006. In celebration of the game’s twentieth anniversary, a remastered version of the original PlayStation version was made available for PlayStation 4 in 2017.
Although its brief length was criticized, the game’s music, story, animation, and gameplay were all highly praised by critics. Two sequels were produced: PaRappa the Rapper 2, a direct sequel released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, and Um Jammer Lammy, a guitar-based spin-off released in 1999 for the PlayStation. It is listed as one of the best video games in several publications.
