The idea of establishing National IDs for Tanzanian citizens and foreigners living in Tanzania was born in 1968 at the “Interstate Intelligence Gathering” meeting that included delegates from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia. At that time the countries of Kenya and Zambia already had their National IDs.
It was decided that in order to strengthen security relations based on the Rule of Law in the four countries, the countries of Uganda and Tanzania must also issue National Identity Cards to their citizens.

Method 1: use USSD via mobile phones with Vodacom or Airtel SIM cards
If you have a mobile phone with a Vodacom or Airtel SIM card, you can obtain the NIDA national identification number through the interactive USSD. These are the steps:–
- Dial * 152 * 00 #
- Select 3
- Then select 2
- Please enter your full name (first, middle and last name, for example Dan John Sele)
- Enter your mobile phone number, the one used during registration for national identification.
- Agree to pay the necessary charges
- You will be notified by SMS of your national identification number if your records have been fully captured in the system. Otherwise, you will receive an SMS stating that your records were not found.
Method 2: using the NIDA website
If you have access to the Internet, you can also use your browser to obtain your national identification number. I prefer this method because it also allows you to print a copy of your national ID card. See how to print a copy of the NIDA National ID Card in Tanzania for more details.
- Navigate to http://nida.go.tz or https://services.nida.go.tz/nidportal/get_nin.aspx#/
- Point to the link of the National Identity menu
- Click on get national identification number
- Enter your Name
- Select your date of birth
- Enter your mother’s first and last name
- Click search
The browser will interact with the NIDA database and present its national identification number. If not, you may have made a minor mistake and will be prompted to correct the details you just provided.
National ID NIDA Verification Portal is the system developed by NIDA so that people who register for a national identity card can obtain an identification number and a copy of the identification while they wait for their real identification. This system allows a person to obtain their national identification number and a copy of the identification without having to go to the NIDA offices.
This portal is to retrieve information from the national identification database. The intended users are
- NIDA stakeholders
- Holder of the national identification card.
Who uses this portal to establish a PIN CODE that will be used to disclose your information when necessary.
To get what you need from the system, you must fill in the required information correctly in order to retrieve your data from the system.
Method 3: visit the NIDA regional offices
This is the last, least preferred method of obtaining your NIDA National Identification Number. For those who have tried method one and did not get their national identification number, then they should try this third method. Here they are supposed to visit any nearby NIDA regional office and provide their details.
NIDA staff will look up the national identification number from the NIDA database. If your data is not in their database, they will recommend that you complete the registration form and go through the biometric scanning process.
The National Identification Authority (NIDA) is a public institution mandated to register and issue secured national identification cards to citizens, legal residents, and refugees who are 18 years of age or older.
NIDA also manages the national identification database. The data stored in the NIDA database is
shared by NIDA stakeholders, for example. Banks, Social Security Funds for their customer identification processes.
