Captain Angad Prathap was born on August 26, 1976, in Thiruvazhiyad village, Palakkad district, Kerala, India. His father, Valampil Balakrishnan Nair, was an engineer and a retired government employee, and his mother, Koolanghaat Prameela Nair, was a homemaker.

Angad Prathap completed his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Palakkad, and later joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune. He graduated from NDA in 1995 and was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot.

During his career in the Indian Air Force, Angad Prathap has flown various fighter aircraft, including the MiG-21, MiG-27, and Su-30MKI.
