The Gauteng Department of Education is mandated to provide compulsory basic education to all learners in the province progressively, including learners with special needs and early childhood education. The Department therefore; seeks to provide access to quality teaching, learning and assessment for all learners in the Gauteng Province.

GDE Grade 8 Registration 2023 Required Documents

All documents must be certified before you upload them.

Learner documents:

  • Birth certificate

  • Latest school report

Parent/s documents:

  • Proof of residence (municipal account)

  • Proof of work address (if applying using these criteria)

  • ID document or passport (of both parents)

Additional documents required if one is not a South African citizen are:

  • Study Permit

  • Temporary or permanent residence permit from the Department of Home Affairs; or

  • Evidence that you have applied for permission to stay in South Africa

Do not bring the documents to the school rather submit them online.

Please note that learners living in the allocated feeder area and siblings will be given preference to the work address criteria.

Submission of Documents by Parents
Parents upload or submit supporting documents to all schools applied to within 7 days after application.

Verification of Documents
Schools verify documents, provide parents with proof of receipt of documents and update applicant’s document status on the system.

Waiting List Management
Schools submit electronically signed off Online Waiting List indicating successful and unsuccessful applicants based on document verification to District Director for approval. The District Directors then quality assure School Waiting Lists in line with admissions criteria and available spaces and electronically signs off waiting list, which is then recieved by the schools before placement. Schools confirm Waiting Lists in consulation with Districts.

Electronic messages to parents (SMS) informing them of successful and unsuccessful applications. Parents are then required to accept/reject placement offers (Within 7 school days)

Gauteng Online Application For 2024 Phases

“The first phase starts on August 10 and ends on September 3, 2023, at midnight. The second stage begins on September 13 at 8 am and ends on October 8 at midnight. Phase 1 runs from October 15 to November 30 and phases two from November 15 to November 30.”

The second phase, which begins September 13, is open to first and eighth-grade applicants who are not in the departmental system. This includes those who are not from within the country, as well as those from private and free schools.

Accommodation will take place between 15 October and 30 November. Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, said there would be 47 centers across the province to help people without internet access.
