The existing infrastructure maintenance is becoming more and more expensive, according to a statement released by Cabinet on Thursday.
The country’s driving license would be compliant with the International Information Technology Personal Identification Compliant Driving Licence (ISO18013) thanks to the new suggested card, according to Cabinet.
A new driver’s license card will be introduced in South Africa starting in October 2023, according to plans revealed by the department in February of this year by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula.
Minister Mbalula stated the new card will have a lot of security upgrades and worldwide recognition, meaning it may be used as a form of identification, during a media briefing conducted at the time.
According to him, the Department of Transport will conduct a procurement process after receiving cabinet approval, and a pilot program for the new license card is scheduled to begin in October 2023.
According to the Minister, the present card will gradually be phased out over a five-year period, and the government is also considering making the renewal time for the card ten years long rather than the current five.
