Founded in 1935, the Young Africans Sports Club—also known as Yanga—is a Tanzanian football team based in Dar es Salaam’s Jangwani neighborhood. Their home games are held at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

“Yanga” is the name of the club, which translates to “Young Boys.” The team has won 28 league titles and a number of domestic cups; five times they have won CECAFA Club Championship (an international football tournament for East African Clubs).

In the 1920s, some football enthusiasts in Dar es Salaam (then part of Tanganyika) joined hands with their counterparts from other parts of Africa to form a league.

The club’s early name was New Young. Later, the Dar es Salaam Young Africans SC took its place; when this team folded—along with other soccer clubs in Tanzania at that time due to financial challenges —YASCO (Young Africans Sports Club) emerged as a new entity and inherited all rights from Ngawesi FC (Nyika Wanderers), which is still recognized by FIFA.

In its first year, the members of a club named—after their profession and hobby—the Fursuiters quarreled over how poorly their team performed and what these results meant. In 1936 – which saw even worse results than 1935’s disappointing season – some quit to form a new football-related club.

In the early days of soccer in Tanzania, a group of Arbans who wanted to leave were the ones who stirred up trouble between club members—which led to a split.

They were able to do this because they and other rebels made their own team called Queens F.C., while Young Africans remained intact as did Simba (who later became two teams competing against each other).
