State University of Zanzibar is a public university located on Unguja Island in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The university was established by an act of House of Representatives of Zanzibar in 1999 and became operational in 2002

(SUZA) was established by Act No. 8 of 1999 of the Zanzibar House of Representatives which was then amended by Act No. 11 of 2009

Currently, SUZA consists of seven campuses that are found at equally beautiful but different locations within the islands. Six campuses are located in Unguja.

Admission requirements vary slightly according to the program the applicant is seeking admission for and/or individual circumstances. The school or department in which the applicant wishes to register may prescribe certain additional course requirements if the student is deemed to be deficient.

Below are the admission requirements based on programmes:

1: Admission Requirements for Undergraduate Degree Programmes

BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH EDUCATION (BAE) – (3 years) BACHELOR OF KISWAHILI WITH EDUCATION (BAKE) – (3 years)

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN GEOGRAPHY & ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES (BAGES) – (3 years)

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN HISTORY (BAH) – (3 years)

Entry Requirements

The applicant should possess:

i)Five passes at Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) of the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) or its equivalent, three of which should be at credit level (C) in relevant subjects.

PLUS

ii)Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) with at least two

(2)Principal passes in appropriate subjects of not less than 4.5 points excluding Religious studies (those with higher scores will be given priority).

OR

iii)Holders of appropriate and recognized Diplomas of not less than Second Class (GPA of 3.5) or above.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH EDUCATION (BScED) – (3 years)

Entry Requirements

i)Five passes including relevant science subjects at Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) of the National Examinations Council (NECTA) of Tanzania or its equivalent, three of which should be at credit level (‘C’ is a minimum).

PLUS

ii)Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) with at least two

(2)principal passes in relevant science subjects of not less than 4 points. OR

iii) Holders of recognized and relevant Diplomas of not less than Second Class level (GPA 3.5) or above.

BACHELOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION & MANAGEMENT (BITAM) – (3 years)

Entry Requirements

i.Three credit passes (‘C’ is minimum) at Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) of the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) or its equivalent.

PLUS

Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) with at least two (2) Principal passes, provided that subject combination is not merely comprised of languages or religious subjects.

OR

ii.A Diploma in IT, Computer Science or other relevant accredited Diploma by recognized Institutions with a GPA of not less than 3.5.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY WITH EDUCATION (BSc & IT-Ed) – (3 years)

Entry Requirements

i)Two principal passes at the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) or equivalent, obtained from the following science subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology or geography, with a total of not less than 4.0 points. A subsidiary in the second subject will be allowed if the candidate obtains a ‘D’ grade or above in the subject he/she wishes to major in his/her undergraduate degree.

AND

ii. Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) of the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) or East African Certificate of Education (E.A.C.E) ‘O’ level with at least three credits (C) or five simple passes

(D) OR

iii.A recognized diplomas in Heritage Management, Tourism Management, Hospitality Management, Hotel and Catering, Hotel Operations, Tour Guiding, Sales and Marketing, Education, Language studies, Accountancy, Marketing and Museums studies and relevant diplomas from any higher recognized learning Institution with an average GPA of at least 3.5

2: Admission Requirements for Postgraduate Degree Programmes

2.1 Masters / Higher Degree (2 Years duration)

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in any discipline.
  2. A post-graduate diploma in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.

2.2 Doctorate Degree

  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in any discipline.
