The National Senior Certificate, or NSC, is a high school diploma that is used in South Africa. It is also the school-leaving certificate. This certificate is also known as the matriculation certificate (matric), as it is grade 12.

With effect from 2008, the NSC (previously known as the Further Education and Training Certificate, or FETC) replaced the Senior Certificate. It was phased in with grade 10 in 2006.
The National Senior Certificate is currently the school-leaving certification. The National Senior Certificate is awarded to pupils who have completed at least seven subjects.
This includes two compulsory South African languages or Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy.

All subjects are taken at the same level. There is no standard or higher grade than in the past. The official pass mark is 40%. According to zainfo.co.za the average mark for any subject is typically 55. A small percentage of applicants score an ‘A’ in any subject.
