Mapinduzi Cup is the first knockout football tournament. In honor of the Zanzibar Revolution, the name Mapinduzi means Revolution.
The Zanzibar Football Federation started the Mapinduzi Cup competition as a competition to honor the annual Zanzibar Revolution Day celebrations on January 12.
The year of the establishment of the cup was 1998. However, the cup is contested by clubs from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
Clubs from Kenya and Uganda, Rwanda and Burudani are regularly invited to participate from 2013.
The three tournaments are the third largest knockout tournament in Zanzibar, along with the Zanzibar Cup and the Nyerere Cup.
