July 2022 California Bar Exam Online Application Portal;- The next California Bar Exam is scheduled for July 26–27, 2022. The exam will be administered in person. Please note that the July 2022 California Bar Examination will be held as an in-person examination. Applicants will be required to select a testing location when applying in the Applicant Portal.

The examination is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday at approximately 5:30 p.m. and on Wednesday at approximately 5:00 p.m. End times may differ based on the length of time taken for the reading of instructions.

Time: All applicants must be seated no later than 8:20 a.m. on both days. The examination will begin immediately following the reading of instructions. Applicants should plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early to locate their assigned sections or rooms. Applicants must be seated no later than 1:30 p.m. for the afternoon sessions; instructions will begin promptly at 1:45 p.m.

Attorneys who signed up for the General Bar Examination are expected to participate on both days. Applicants who have applied for and are eligible to take the Attorneys’ Examination will only be seated for the examination on Tuesday.

Notice regarding scope of the California Bar Exam

Applicants are expected to know the California Rules of Professional Conduct in effect at the time the exam is administered (current law). The rules were substantially revised effective November 1, 2018. Minor amendments were made subsequent to that date.

The latest amendments, amending Rule 1.1 [Competence] and Rule 5.4 [Financial and Similar Arrangements with Nonlawyers] were amended by the Supreme Court effective March 22, 2021. These rules are within the scope of the upcoming July 2022 California Bar Examination.

Applications are now available in the Applicant Portal.

How to apply:

  1. Log onto your Applicant Portal.
  2. From the menu options, click ‘View Forms.’
  3. Under the Examinations menu, select the ‘California Bar Examination Application.’
  4. To begin the application process, click ‘Launch Application.’

Once all the application sections are completed, go to the Verification screen and click the ‘submit’ button. You will be prompted to sign a declaration form and submit payment. You will receive a confirmation email once you have successfully submitted the application.

What happens after I take the exam?

Results from the February bar exam will be released by May 6, 2022. The State Bar is actively working on shortening the grading timeline so that applicants receive their results on an expedited schedule.

Payment policies

Credit and debit card payments: For credit or debit card payments, a processing fee of 2.5 percent will be added to all charges. If your credit or debit card transaction is denied, you will not be able to submit your application until you provide another Mastercard, Visa, American Express, or Discover card.

ACH (e-check) Payment: You may also make payments by ACH. There is no processing fees associated with ACH payments. You will need your Bank Routing Number and Bank Account Number. It takes seven days for ACH payments to be processed by our bank processor. If within that seven days a payment is returned for insufficient funds or declined for any reason, your application will be considered incomplete until a replacement payment with any service charges are received.

All declined payments will incur a $20 service charge added to any late fees in effect. The application deadline will be enforced if the payment is not received within the published deadlines.
