The Department of Basic Education has announced that applications for phase two of teacher assistant jobs are now open following the successful phase one which ended in April. In a statement on Sunday (26 September), the Department said applications for the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) will close on 3 October 2021.

SA Youth was officially launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Youth Day June 16, 2021 as part of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention (PYEI)* and serves to aggregate opportunities and link unemployed young people to jobs and work experiences.

SA Youth is a national pathway management network, an initiative that brings together eight government departments led by the Department of Employment and Labour, in a strong partnership with Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator and other organisations, to form a network that will support young people to find pathways into the economy.

According to the Department of Basic Education, the following teacher assistant jobs are available:

  1. Education Assistant – Curriculum.
  2. Education Assistant – ICT/e-Cadres.
  3. Education Assistant – Reading Champions.
  4. General School Assistant – Child & Youth Care Worker.
  5. General School Assistant – Handyman (no matric required).
  6. General School Assistant – Sports and Enrichment Agent (no matric required).

Department outlined the following criteria for applicants:

  1. Applicants must not turn 36 before 31 March 2022.
  2. Live within walking distance from school.
  3. Must not be working, studying or training (even part-time).
  4. Only one opportunity can be taken up per household.
  5. Must not be receiving a government grant (NSFAS, Funza Lushaka).
  6. No criminal record.

[BEEI Applications Phase II] Applications For The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative

Applicants who receive a notice that they have been shortlisted will be required to provide the following documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  2. Testimonials (former school, local chief, church leader, etc).
  3. Police clearance certificates.
  4. Affidavit/Declaration by applicant stating he/she has no criminal record while awaiting the police clearance.
  5. Certified qualifications such as Matric, (where applicable: NQF Level 4 qualification certificate, for Education Assistant applicants with NQF level 6 and 7 an added advantage).
  6. Certified copy of identity document/passport.

The Presidential Youth Employment Intervention (PYEI) was announced by the President in his February 2020 State of the Nation Address (SONA), as a comprehensive response to the challenge of youth unemployment in South Africa. The intervention includes five priority actions over five years to fundamentally alter the trajectory of youth employment, coordinated by the Project Management Office (PMO) in the Presidency. It is a coordinated national plan of action that ‘aims to contribute towards a South Africa where youth are actively participating in the economy with greater dignity and a sense of agency over their contribution to society.
