How to Apply CSIR Bursary Programme 2022

Please read these notes and instructions carefully before completing the form. Be sure to read every section and ensure that the information you provide is accurate.

  • Applications that are incomplete and that include misrepresentations will immediately be disregarded.
  • Please ensure that you attach ALL of the Required Documents
  • Closing dates per application type:
    • CSIR Inter-Bursary Support Programme closes: Tuesday, August 31, 2021
  • Bursary allocation year per application type:
    • CSIR Inter-Bursary Support Programme will be allocated for the 2022 academic year
  • It is your responsibility to apply for entrance for your intended course and university and to ensure that you are able to meet the entrance requirements stipulated for your course.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to find a suitable supervisor and to ensure the supervisor supports the application.
  • Please ensure that you complete all the sections of this application form.
  • Please select the correct funding opportunity when completing your application.

You will receive a confirmation e-mail once we have received your application.
Communication will be sent to all the applicants within two months of the closing date of the applications to notify students of their application status.

It is important to note that the application form should be filled thoroughly. Any incomplete application can be rejected and the bursary will not be granted.

Attach the following documents along with your application

  • An updated copy of your CV
  • Certified ID document (barcoded)
  • An application letter mentioning the field of study you intend to apply for.
  • High School students are required to attach their grade 11 and matric results (certified).
  • For tertiary students, it is mandatory to attach their matric and latest transcript. Students enrolled at multiple universities for their tertiary studies should combine all their transcripts in one document.
  • Candidates under 18 years of age must comply with POPI regulations and submit a consent form signed by their parents/guardians with a certified copy of their ID document.

Important Information:

  1. Only complete applications will be accepted
  2. The Bursary will be allocated for the academic year 2022
  3. The Bursary covers all the costs related to the University studies

Students will receive a confirmation email once their application is received

  1. Students whose applications are rejected will be advised
  2. Selected candidates will require to attend an interview

Students pursuing undergraduate to an Honours degree in the fields that are a priority to CSIR are awarded this Bursary.

Students of the following fields are funded by CSIR

Undergraduate-Honours Degree

Aeronautical Engineering, Applied Physics, Bio-Informatics, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science with Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Data Science/Modelling, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering,  Physical Metallurgy, Economic Science, Information Systems, Extractive Metallurgy, and many others.

Undergraduate-Honours Degree (Corporate/Support)

B.Com/BTech in Accounting for Risk Management

Master’s Degree

The Master’s degree comprises various Research Groups like Human and Societal systems, Advanced material engineering, Optronic Sensor systems, and so on. Each research group has a specific field of study and requires certain qualifications.

Please Note: The CSIR-DSI Inter-Bursary Support Programme applications are restricted to those students whose degrees are aligned to specific thematic research areas and research themes/technology streams. Supervisor endorsement and motivation will be required with each bursary application for Masters and Doctoral applications.

Preference will be given to applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and people living with disabilities.
