On Thursday, July 14, 2021, those sending or giving money to a mobile phone agent will start paying patriotic taxes between Sh10 and Sh10,000 depending on the size of the transaction.

Before the patriotic tax, Airtel Money customers used to deduct only Sh350 online to send Sh15,000 but now they will pay Sh960 and they used to deduct Sh550 to another network but it has increased to Sh1,160. When they want to give, they will pay Sh2,010 instead of the original Sh1,400.

For Mpesa customers, sending Sh15,000 to an unregistered customer, deductions will be Sh970 from Sh360 while costing Sh2,820 to an unregistered customer from Sh2,210. To other networks, the amount will be paid Sh1,160 from the existing Sh550 and those transferred to their bank accounts will be deducted Sh1,810 instead of the existing Sh1,200. To pay that amount to an agent or ATM, they will be deducted Sh2,060 from Sh1,450.

NOTE;- With these new changes, the mobile transaction client will be paying three taxes. The first is the customs duty which is two percent and 18 percent Value Added Tax (VAT). These two existed before the transformation begins today.

Sh360 deductions, there was to send Sh15,000 to an unregistered customer, Vodacom was receiving Sh289.1 and the Government was collecting Sh65 VAT and Sh5.9 of customs duties but from tomorrow the Government will be leaving with Sh680.9 while Vodacom will remain the same.

Speaking on the 360 episodes of Clouds television station, July 12, the Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba said “this is not just a tax but a fundraiser. We will donate through deductions. ”

“The person who sends from 1000-2000 is deducted 10 shillings, he sends 20,000 to 30,000 is deducted 960, from 1 million to 3 million is 9000 and 3 million and onwards is 10,000. If you can send 10,000 why don’t you donate to development activities ?, for someone who sends 100,000 to 200,000 we have suggested donating 2500 so that a child who failed to go to school can go ”Minister of Finance and Planning Mwigulu Nchemba
